A contentious Texas Senate race has ignited a firestorm of controversy following allegations leveled against Democratic candidate James Talarico. Political influencer Morgan Thompson, sharing her experience on TikTok, claims Talarico made deeply troubling remarks about his former opponent, Congressman Colin Allred.
Thompson, who is Black, alleges that after a January town hall, Talarico described Allred as a “mediocre Black man.” The alleged comment came as Talarico contrasted Allred with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, whom he reportedly characterized as “a formidable, intelligent Black woman.”
The timing of the remarks is particularly sensitive, occurring shortly after Allred ended his Senate campaign and as Crockett formally entered the race. This shift in the Democratic primary landscape appears to have been central to Talarico’s alleged comments.
Talarico’s campaign responded with a statement calling Thompson’s account a “mischaracterization of a private conversation.” He insisted his praise for Crockett was not intended to diminish Allred, and vehemently denied any racial motivation behind his words.
He acknowledged the potential for misinterpretation given the nation’s history of racism, stating he understands the impact his words can have. Talarico emphasized his respect for Allred and asserted that Democrats are united in their goals.
Allred, a former NFL player and civil rights attorney, swiftly and forcefully responded to the allegations in a video posted online. He accused Talarico of using praise for Black women as a thinly veiled attempt to criticize Black men.
“If you want to compliment Black women, just do it,” Allred stated directly, “Don’t do it while also tearing down a Black man.” He argued that this tactic is detrimental to the Black community as a whole.
Allred went further, suggesting a hint of self-awareness in Talarico’s remarks. He questioned whether the use of the word “mediocre” stemmed from Talarico’s own insecurities, given Allred’s diverse accomplishments.
Concluding his response, Allred unequivocally endorsed Crockett for Senate and urged voters to reject Talarico’s candidacy. The primary election, scheduled for March 3rd, now carries a heightened sense of urgency and scrutiny.
The winner of the Democratic primary will then face incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the general election, making this internal party dispute a pivotal moment for Texas politics.
