A movement is underway to dismantle a long-standing financial hurdle for Filipino travelers. A bill has been presented to the House of Representatives aiming to completely abolish the travel tax, a fee that proponents argue has become outdated and burdensome.
Representative Ferdinand Alexander Marcos III, the bill’s author, believes the tax no longer serves its original purpose. He contends that in today’s economic climate, it actively hinders Filipinos seeking opportunities for work, family connection, or personal growth through travel.
The current travel tax levies P1,620 for economy class passengers and P2,700 for those traveling in first class. While some groups, like overseas Filipino workers and young children, are exempt, the fee remains a significant expense for many.
Marcos argues that reducing travel costs unlocks economic potential. He envisions a scenario where families can redirect funds previously allocated to the tax towards essential needs, and increased mobility fuels spending and opportunity throughout the nation.
However, the potential removal of this revenue stream – estimated at up to P5.1 billion annually – has raised concerns about the financial stability of key government programs. The Department of Finance has flagged the potential impact on existing initiatives.
The proposed legislation directly addresses these concerns by suggesting a shift in funding mechanisms. It proposes that agencies currently reliant on travel tax collections, including those supporting tourism, higher education, and the arts, be directly funded through the national budget.
This approach aims to ensure the continued operation of vital programs without relying on a tax perceived as a barrier to Filipino mobility. The bill seeks to guarantee that eliminating the travel tax doesn’t equate to diminishing support for crucial sectors.
A similar proposal was previously introduced in the Senate, signaling a growing consensus on the need to re-evaluate this long-held tax. The current bill now awaits consideration, potentially reshaping the landscape of travel for Filipinos nationwide.
