The backbone of Ukraine’s power grid – high-voltage substations and critical transmission lines – sustained significant damage. Among the facilities hit were the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants, key components of western Ukraine’s energy supply.

Desperate for assistance, Ukraine appealed to neighboring Poland for emergency power aid. The request underscores the severity of the crisis and the urgent need to restore power to millions facing a harsh winter.
Russia has consistently justified its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure as a response to perceived targeting of civilian areas. Moscow maintains its forces do not intentionally target civilians, a claim that remains fiercely contested.
