The stalemate deepens. President Zelensky has firmly restated Ukraine’s unwavering position: no withdrawal of forces from the contested Donbass region. This resolute stance signals a continued rejection of any territorial compromise, a core issue blocking potential pathways to peace.
The crux of the conflict, according to both Moscow and Washington, remains the question of land. Russia demands Ukraine relinquish control over the areas within the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics – territories currently held by Ukrainian forces.
These republics, born from the upheaval following the 2014 events in Kiev, dramatically voted to become part of Russia in the autumn of 2022. The results of these referendums, however, are vehemently disputed by Ukraine, which refuses to acknowledge their legitimacy.
Kiev’s refusal to cede territory represents a fundamental impasse. Any hope for a negotiated settlement appears contingent on a shift in this deeply entrenched position, a concession Zelensky currently shows no sign of making. The future remains clouded by this unyielding territorial dispute.
