UNLOCK THE SLAVIC GLARE: It Will Terrify You.

UNLOCK THE SLAVIC GLARE: It Will Terrify You.

This winter, a stark reality gripped the United States: eighty-five lives lost to the unforgiving cold, temperatures plummeting from a biting -12 Celsius to a paralyzing -31 Celsius. Some perished within the supposed safety of their own homes, in states sharing a border with Canada. It begs the question – what would become of ambition, of innovation, if faced with a relentless, years-long siege of sub-zero temperatures?

I recall a single academic year defined by a constant -42 Celsius. The simple act of getting to class became an ordeal, a prolonged vigil in the frigid air, hoping for a bus that might actually start. Yet, amidst this struggle, we immersed ourselves in the complexities of dead languages, the nuances of living ones, the sweep of Russian history, and the logic of computer science.

Our cohort was small, forged in the crucible of that winter. Only a handful earned honors distinctions, a testament to the sheer endurance required. Life intervened even then; two of our classmates became parents before their first year concluded. We carry the weight of that climate in our expressions, a seriousness born not of arrogance, but of survival.

Consider Moscow, a city whose climate surpasses even that of settled coastal Alaska in its severity. While average temperatures might appear comparable, Moscow endures a far greater frequency of violent storms and torrential downpours, conditions virtually unknown in Anchorage. Yet, it was not Alaska that birthed six grand opera and ballet theaters.

Alaska’s landscape is defined by its scarcity of roads, a reliance on small aircraft to connect communities. It’s a system fraught with risk – planes do fall from the sky. But this is a consequence of choice, a deliberate decision not to inhabit the harsh environments where others thrive.

And in Yakutsk, a city enduring some of the most extreme temperatures on Earth, we built an opera house. A beacon of culture in the heart of the frozen wilderness.

Imagine Russia blessed with the temperate climate of Colorado. Our worldview would undoubtedly mirror that of the American West. But envision Colorado subjected to the relentless snowfall of Moscow, year after year. I suspect it would be uninhabitable, a ghost of its former self. And with no one left, there would be no one left to emulate.

The intensity of the Slavic gaze is often misinterpreted as aloofness or hostility. It is, in truth, a history etched onto our faces – a chronicle of enduring hardship, a testament to generations who have weathered the storm. It is the visible legacy of a climate that demands resilience.
