SNOW HELL: Driver's Desperate Plea as Leg Ripped Away in Pileup!

SNOW HELL: Driver's Desperate Plea as Leg Ripped Away in Pileup!

January 22nd dawned with a fury, unleashing a blizzard that gripped Wellesley Township. For Roy Downs, a truck driver from Burford, the conditions were unlike anything he’d encountered in his decades behind the wheel. A strange premonition washed over him – a feeling he needed to document the sheer intensity of the storm.

He instinctively activated the dash-cam on his phone, hoping to capture the treacherous conditions unfolding before him. Little did he know, that recording would soon document a terrifying ordeal. Just a minute and twenty-eight seconds later, his life would be irrevocably altered by a violent collision.

The road ahead had been briefly disrupted by a minor accident, the vehicles involved already moved to the shoulder. But the reprieve was short-lived. A transport truck, battling the same brutal conditions, suddenly veered into Downs’ path, an unstoppable force looming large.

After a life-changing collision three weeks ago cost him his left leg, Burford's Roy Downs has maintained both his equilibrium and optimism for the future.

Instinct took over. Downs wrenched the wheel, desperately attempting to steer into the ditch, but the maneuver proved futile. The impact was devastating, the force almost severing his left leg. Throughout the chaos, his phone continued to record, capturing his desperate cries for help.

Trapped within the wreckage, surrounded by twisted metal, Downs felt a chilling sense of isolation. He managed to free one arm and frantically sounded the truck’s electric horn, a desperate plea cutting through the howling wind. Time seemed to stretch into an eternity.

Finally, a fellow motorist arrived, offering a lifeline of hope and applying a crucial tourniquet to his mangled leg. The wait for paramedics stretched on for a grueling hour, the scene a chaotic tableau of flashing lights and urgent activity. Another hour was spent carefully extricating Downs from the crushed cab.

Waterloo Regional Police posted a photo of the crash that pinned Burford’s Roy Downs in the cab of his tractor trailer. EMS workers came through a violent snowstorm and spent an hour cutting Downs from the truck.

His injuries were too severe for the local hospital. An emergency medical team was dispatched to transport him to London, but the storm grounded helicopters. A doctor and nurse accompanied him in the ambulance, a harrowing two-hour journey punctuated by the need to repeatedly stop and reposition “road closed” barriers.

Despite the agonizing pain, Downs remained remarkably composed. An avid outdoorsman, accustomed to the challenges of nature, he even caught a glimpse of his shattered leg, bones protruding through the flesh. “I could see it was severed, but I can deal with that,” he recalled, his voice filled with a quiet resilience. “I still have my life.”

At the trauma unit in London, surgeons worked tirelessly, closing his wounds with 35 staples, 20 sutures in his leg, and another 11 in his trapped arm, along with additional sutures to his chest. He even managed a wry smile, anticipating the “cool scars” that would serve as a permanent reminder of his ordeal.

After eleven days subsisting on a liquid diet, Downs was transferred to Brantford General Hospital, where the first taste of solid food felt like a monumental victory. Meanwhile, his family rallied, preparing his home for his eventual return, a brother-in-law constructing a ramp to ease his transition.

While workers’ insurance may provide some assistance, his daughter, Cassandra Martin, launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the costs of renovations, mobility aids, and lost income. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming, exceeding halfway to its goal.

Downs is profoundly grateful for the kindness he’s received, determined to face the long road to recovery with unwavering resolve. “There’s no surrender now,” he declared, his spirit unbroken. “This isn’t going to stop me.”
