CARER'S GREED EXPOSED: Forced to Sell After Milking Vulnerable Woman DRY!

CARER'S GREED EXPOSED: Forced to Sell After Milking Vulnerable Woman DRY!

Pamela Gwinnett, a woman of 62, systematically exploited a vulnerable elderly woman, treating her not as a friend, but as a source of wealth to be drained. The chilling details of her deception have earned her a dark nickname amongst those who know the case: ‘The Black Widow.’

The story unfolded as a calculated betrayal. Gwinnett discovered Joan Green, a former accountant whose husband had been a senior manager at British Aerospace, possessed a comfortable nest egg built through years of diligent work and careful investment. To Gwinnett, however, Joan wasn’t a person, but a “cash cow to be milked dry.”

She skillfully inserted herself into Joan’s life, presenting a facade of benevolent friendship. This allowed her to isolate the increasingly frail woman from her family and trusted friends, weaving a web of lies that painted Joan’s loved ones as thieves intent on stealing her pension. The manipulation was insidious and deeply effective.

As Covid-19 swept the nation, Gwinnett moved Joan into a care home near her own home, ostensibly for her safety, but in reality, to maintain closer control. When lockdown lifted, she brought Joan back to her house, but took drastic steps to ensure her continued isolation – padlocking the gates and changing the landline number, effectively imprisoning her ‘golden goose.’

During Joan’s final months, her mental state deteriorated, marked by increasing confusion and bewilderment. Yet, Gwinnett continued her relentless exploitation, plundering £161,000 before Joan was officially deemed to lack the mental capacity to manage her own affairs. Even then, the theft didn’t stop.

Gwinnett opened a joint account and brazenly transferred another £119,000 from Joan’s funds, continuing her deceit even as safeguards were put in place. The total stolen amounted to over £280,000, a sum amassed through callous manipulation and a complete disregard for Joan’s well-being.

The emotional toll on Joan was devastating. In her final years, she tragically believed her family despised her and actively avoided her, a direct result of Gwinnett’s calculated lies. Her step-daughter described the heartbreaking impact of this deception, revealing the profound sense of abandonment Joan experienced.

Despite being sentenced to six years in prison in her absence, Gwinnett attempted to flee justice. She requested permission to travel to Tenerife to scatter her brother’s ashes, a request that was denied. Undeterred, she boarded a plane hours later and remains on the Spanish island, evading authorities and the consequences of her actions.

A Proceeds of Crime Hearing resulted in a confiscation order of £350,180.79, demanding Gwinnett repay the stolen funds within three months. The judge ordered the sale of her house to cover the debt, and warned of a potential 42-month prison sentence if she fails to comply. A compensation order was also made to Joan Green’s estate, a small measure of justice for a terrible wrong.

The case stands as a stark warning about the vulnerability of the elderly and the devastating consequences of predatory behavior. It highlights the importance of vigilance and the enduring damage caused by those who exploit trust for personal gain.
