A familiar aroma, the promise of a quick and satisfying meal – for millions, Jollibee represents a taste of home. But behind the bustling restaurants and beloved dishes lies a complex network of commissaries, the heart of the operation, and a growing commitment to a sustainable future.
Recently, Jollibee Group embarked on a significant energy transformation, partnering with First Gen Corporation to power its Philippine commissaries with renewable resources. The result? A remarkable 99% of the energy used in these crucial facilities now comes from clean sources.
This isn’t just a symbolic gesture. The shift is projected to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a substantial 70% across the covered sites, marking a powerful step towards environmental responsibility.
The foundation of this change lies in harnessing the earth’s own power – 11 megawatts sourced directly from First Gen’s geothermal plant in Bicol. This constant, reliable energy source ensures consistent operations even as the company expands.
This collaboration builds on a previous initiative from 2023, where over 17,000 solar panels, boasting a capacity exceeding 9 megawatts, were installed at key distribution and commissary locations in Parañaque and Laguna.
Beyond simply generating clean energy, First Gen also implemented a sophisticated remote monitoring system. This technology optimizes electricity usage within the logistics hubs, maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste.
“How we power these facilities matters,” stated Joseph C. Tanbuntiong, CEO of Jollibee Group Philippines. He emphasized that a reliable and sustainable energy supply is essential to support the company’s continued growth and maintain consistent service.
Jollibee Group’s reach is vast, encompassing over 10,000 stores and cafés across 33 countries, and a diverse portfolio of 19 distinct brands – from Jollibee and Chowking to international favorites like Smashburger and Tim Ho Wan.
This commitment to renewable energy reflects a broader, disciplined approach to growth, according to Carlos Lorenzo L. Vega, First Gen’s Chief Customer Engagement Officer. Investing in reliable, sustainable systems is seen as integral to long-term success.
First Gen itself is a leading independent power producer, boasting a total installed capacity of over 3,700 megawatts. Their diverse energy portfolio includes natural gas, geothermal, hydropower, wind, and solar technologies, positioning them as a key player in the Philippines’ energy landscape.
