American forces have fully withdrawn from al-Tanf Garrison in Syria, a move finalized on February 11th, marking a significant shift in U.S. regional strategy. The withdrawal stems from a Pentagon decision last year to reduce and consolidate the U.S. military footprint in Syria. Al-Tanf held particular importance, providing crucial access and intelligence gathering capabilities along Syria’s borders. It served as a key deterrent against both cross-border violence and the activities of Iran-backed militias.
Experts suggest the U.S. pullout signals a growing confidence in the progress made against ISIS and the weakening of Iranian proxy networks. It also reflects an expectation that Syrian security forces are increasingly capable of maintaining stability, particularly in collaboration with the Syrian Democratic Forces.
