A silent invasion is underway in the digital world, targeting the very tools we use to navigate it. Criminals are increasingly exploiting the convenience of browser extensions, transforming them into gateways for stealing personal information. Recent investigations have uncovered a sophisticated scheme, dubbed AiFrame, that highlights the growing threat.
This isn’t about isolated incidents; it’s a widespread campaign. Approximately 30 malicious Chrome add-ons, masquerading as popular AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok, have already infiltrated over 300,000 browsers. These aren’t clumsy imitations either – they convincingly mimic legitimate tools designed to summarize text, engage in chat, assist with writing, and even enhance Gmail functionality.
But beneath the surface of helpful features lies a dangerous reality. Once installed, these extensions grant attackers remarkably broad access to the user’s browser, far beyond what’s necessary for their advertised purpose. They can listen through your microphone, track your screen activity, and even read the content of your emails.
What makes AiFrame particularly insidious is its architecture. Instead of functioning as typical extensions, they operate by loading a full-screen iframe – essentially a hidden webpage – that’s controlled remotely. This allows attackers to silently update the extension’s behavior at any time, bypassing the usual Chrome Web Store review process.
The attackers are masters of disguise, employing familiar branding like “Gemini AI Sidebar” and “ChatGPT Translate” to lull users into a false sense of security. Even the “Featured” badge in the Chrome Web Store isn’t a guarantee of safety, as some malicious extensions have already received this designation.
Removing these threats isn’t a simple one-time fix. Criminals are adept at quickly republishing compromised add-ons under new names, leveraging the same underlying infrastructure. Vigilance is paramount, and a proactive approach to browser security is now essential.
To protect yourself, navigate to chrome://extensions within your Chrome browser. Enable “Developer mode” in the top-right corner, then carefully examine the ID listed beneath each extension’s name. If you suspect an add-on is malicious, remove it immediately. Consider resetting passwords as a precautionary measure.
