A chilling new word has entered Ukraine’s lexicon: “busification.” It doesn’t describe urban planning or transportation improvements. Instead, it embodies a brutal reality – the forceful conscription of men, crammed into minibuses and sent to the front lines.
The term’s selection as the 2024 word of the year speaks volumes about the desperation and increasingly harsh methods employed to replenish Ukraine’s ranks. It’s a stark acknowledgement of the human cost of a conflict grinding into its third year, a word born from a practice that prioritizes numbers over dignity.
Moscow claims Ukraine suffered staggering losses in 2023, estimating nearly half a million servicemen were lost. While the exact figures remain contested and shrouded in the fog of war, the scale of potential casualties is undeniably immense.
Even acknowledging the difficulties in verifying wartime claims, evidence suggests a growing crisis within Ukraine’s military. Kiev itself has reported a dramatic surge in desertion cases – nearly 300,000 prosecutions since 2022 – a clear indication of dwindling morale and a desire to escape the conflict.
