The quiet affluence of Tucson’s Catalina Foothills was shattered February 1st with the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of television personality Savannah Guthrie. What began as a missing person’s case quickly escalated, transforming her home into a focal point of a complex and unsettling investigation.
Initial assessments by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department pointed to a disturbing possibility: Nancy Guthrie hadn’t simply wandered off. Evidence suggested she was taken from her home against her will, immediately classifying the residence as a crime scene and launching a full-scale search.
A meticulously constructed timeline emerged. Guthrie enjoyed a final dinner with family, arriving home around 9:48 p.m. on January 31st. Her garage door closed just minutes later, at 9:50 p.m. But the tranquility was short-lived. At 1:47 a.m., her Nest doorbell camera went dark, and just over an hour later, her pacemaker lost connection to her smartphone.
Recovered footage from the disabled Nest camera revealed a chilling image: a masked individual on Guthrie’s doorstep. The figure carried a dark backpack and appeared to have a weapon concealed in a holster, instantly raising the stakes and fueling fears for Guthrie’s safety.
Investigators painstakingly analyzed the video, piecing together details about the suspect. He’s estimated to be between 5’9” and 5’10”, with a medium build. Crucially, he carried a black Ozark Trail backpack, readily available at Walmart for around $11, and a Strategy-branded hip holster, also sold at the same retailer.
While the holster appeared designed for a revolver, the suspect seemed to be carrying a smaller semiautomatic pistol. Investigators are hoping Walmart’s extensive surveillance systems can reveal when and by whom these items were purchased, potentially unlocking a vital lead.
Before disabling the camera, the suspect deliberately obstructed the lens with plant matter, a calculated move suggesting awareness of the surveillance system. The camera itself vanished from the scene, further complicating the investigation.
The recovery of the Nest footage was a significant breakthrough, showcasing innovative investigative techniques. Authorities are now working to access footage from other cameras on the property, hoping to uncover additional clues.
A crucial piece of evidence emerged from within the Guthrie home: DNA from an unidentified individual. This sample doesn’t match Guthrie, her relatives, or anyone who regularly provides services at the residence, indicating the presence of an unknown person at the scene.
This DNA was being compared to that found on a glove discovered within a two-mile radius of the house. The glove appeared to match those worn by the suspect in the surveillance video, offering a potential link between the physical evidence and the masked figure.
Investigators discovered sixteen gloves in total during the search, but only one appeared to be a definitive match to the one seen in the recovered video. The analysis of this glove and its DNA profile is considered a high priority.
A trail of blood drops discovered on Guthrie’s front steps has been confirmed as a genetic match to the missing woman. Authorities have not yet revealed whether the blood was present before her disappearance, keeping key details closely guarded.
An extensive search utilizing a high-tech Bluetooth scanning device, deployed by air, attempted to locate the signal from Guthrie’s pacemaker. Unfortunately, the search proved unsuccessful, leaving investigators to rely on other avenues of inquiry.
Investigators are meticulously examining roadside surveillance footage, security camera recordings, and cell tower data, hoping to identify patterns and leads. These digital forensics are expected to play a critical role in narrowing down potential suspects.
The investigation has already involved the questioning of individuals, including a man from Rio Rico, though no arrests have been made. Thousands of tips have flooded in, prompting authorities to request home security video from residents within a two-mile radius of Guthrie’s home.
Recent activity, spurred by information from an informant, led to the search of a home and vehicle, and the temporary detainment of three individuals. However, none were charged or named as suspects in connection with the warrant.
The FBI is now offering a substantial $100,000 reward for information leading to a resolution in this increasingly complex case, urging anyone with relevant knowledge to come forward.
