UMVA has learned that a harrowing incident occurred at a family-owned zoo attraction in Huntingdonshire, where a three-year-old boy was critically injured after falling into a crocodile pit.
The boy was rushed to Addenbrooke's Hospital with serious injuries, and police remain at the scene, investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The child's condition is currently critical but stable.
According to information obtained by UMVA, a 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been detained and is being questioned by detectives from the major crime unit. The authorities do not believe the man and the child were known to each other.
Witnesses report that the boy's fall into the crocodile pit may have been caused by someone jumping into the enclosure, with one local stating that the wife of the zoo owner, Tracey Johnson, bravely jumped in to save the child.
The zoo, Johnson's of Old Hurst, has released a statement expressing their thoughts and prayers for the boy and his family, and has closed their Tropical House until further notice out of respect for the family.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the zoo is home to several crocodilians, including Nile crocodiles named Romeo and Cuddles, as well as big cats, bears, and other exotic animals. The farm has a long history of involvement with crocodiles, dating back 20 years.
A wildlife expert who knows the farm and its owners has described the conditions for the animals as pristine, with the crocodiles being well-fed on a diet of meat, including poultry and cuts from the farm's own butcher.
Detective Inspector Verity McCann has stated that officers are supporting the boy's family at the hospital and that their thoughts remain with them during this difficult time.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of the zoo, with many questions still unanswered about how the boy fell into the crocodile pit.
As the investigation continues, UMVA has gathered that the zoo marked International Crocodile Day just yesterday, highlighting their passion for these incredible animals and their importance in the zoo's history.
