A brazen thief, known only as “Hamster” to the exasperated staff, systematically targeted a single Greggs bakery in west London. Over six weeks, he repeatedly walked into the shop and helped himself to whatever he pleased, accumulating a staggering bill of nearly £2,000 in stolen goods.
Security footage, recently released by police, reveals a shocking level of audacity. In one clip, the man, often disguised with a hood and cap, casually fills a carrier bag with multiple bottles of Lucozade while a staff member browses a nearby refrigerator. He then simply walks out as the employee enters a back room.
The thefts weren’t isolated incidents. Records show Gosling visited the Greenford branch a remarkable 38 times between December 30th and February 10th, with the value of each raid ranging from a modest £12.30 to as much as £100. Some days, he targeted the bakery multiple times in a single day.
Another clip shows him brazenly continuing to swipe drinks even as a staff member leans in, seemingly attempting to recognize his face. Undeterred, he calmly exits the shop, leaving the refrigerator door swinging open behind him. It was a pattern of calculated risk and astonishing nerve.
Police community support officer James Tupman noted that the sheer number of thefts had a significant impact on the business. Staff diligently logged each incident, providing crucial evidence for the investigation. They identified Adam Gosling, 39, as the “most prolific” offender through the CCTV footage.
Gosling, who is currently homeless, ultimately pleaded guilty to 38 counts of shoplifting. Despite the extensive and repeated nature of his crimes, he was given a four-month suspended sentence. The court opted for a one-year suspension, allowing him to avoid jail time.
Superintendent Sean Lynch emphasized the commitment to addressing issues impacting local businesses and communities. He highlighted a recent decline in theft offenses across Ealing and the wider Metropolitan Police area, attributing the progress to dedicated policing and community partnerships.
The case underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and businesses. Officer Tupman credited the proactive efforts of the Greggs staff for the successful outcome, stating that their detailed record-keeping and support were instrumental in gathering evidence and securing the conviction.
