KELLY'S COMING FOR TRUMP—AND THE WHITE HOUSE!

KELLY'S COMING FOR TRUMP—AND THE WHITE HOUSE!

Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat representing Arizona, has signaled an openness to a presidential run in 2028, acknowledging he would “seriously consider” entering the race. This revelation comes amidst a fierce and ongoing battle with the current administration, adding another layer of complexity to his political future.

In a recent interview with the BBC, the retired Navy captain and former astronaut was careful to state he hasn’t reached a decision. His immediate focus remains on the upcoming 2026 election, which he views as critical. However, the possibility of a White House bid is undeniably on his mind.

Kelly emphasized the deeply personal nature of such a decision, stating it would require extensive conversations with his wife, Gabrielle Giffords, their daughters, and remarkably, his identical twin brother – also a former astronaut. He pondered the profound impact a campaign would have on his brother, given their unique connection.

The senator’s contemplation arrives on the heels of two significant developments in his dispute with the administration. A federal judge recently blocked the Pentagon from demoting him, and a grand jury declined to indict him on seditious conspiracy charges, marking a temporary victory in a contentious legal and political struggle.

The core of the conflict stems from a 90-second video Kelly created with fellow Democratic lawmakers, reminding service members of their right to refuse “illegal” orders. The message, intended to uphold legal principles, drew sharp criticism from President Trump, who labeled it “seditious behavior” and called for arrests.

Despite the Justice Department’s efforts, a grand jury refused to bring charges against Kelly and his colleagues. Simultaneously, a move to initiate proceedings that could have reduced Kelly’s rank and retirement pay was challenged in court.

Kelly argued the attempt to demote him was unconstitutional retaliation for exercising his First Amendment rights. A U.S. District Judge agreed, temporarily halting the action and warning against infringing on the liberties of retired service members. An appeal is already underway.

Reflecting on his unconventional path to the Senate, Kelly highlighted his distinct background. He is one of the few engineers in Congress, the only senator with a graduate degree in engineering, and possesses rare combat experience.

His career spanned 25 years in the military, a stark contrast to many who begin their political journeys in state legislatures. He described himself not as a politician, but as a Navy pilot incredibly fortunate to have flown the Space Shuttle four times.

Kelly expressed a sense of humility regarding the prospect of running for president, acknowledging his surprise at even being in this position. He emphasized the gravity of the decision, stating he has not yet made a determination, but will give the matter serious thought.
