A shadow fell over the Peel Regional Police force this weekend with the passing of Kylo, a seven-year-old Belgian shepherd and dedicated service dog. He succumbed to cancer, leaving a void felt deeply by those who served alongside him and the community he protected.
Bred in the Netherlands, Kylo joined the force in 2018 and quickly proved his worth as a general service dog. His training extended to narcotics detection, a skillset he honed alongside his handler, Constable Mario Pittarelli, beginning in January 2019.
The loss is described as “significant,” a testament to Kylo’s unwavering dedication and the countless hours he devoted to public safety. His contributions won’t be forgotten by those who witnessed his commitment firsthand.
Over his years of service, Kylo participated in “thousands of calls” and played a crucial role in “numerous investigations.” He was directly responsible for over 100 arrests, a remarkable achievement that speaks to his skill and determination.
His work wasn’t confined to local streets; Kylo’s expertise was frequently called upon at Toronto Pearson International Airport. There, he partnered with the Canada Border Services Agency and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, contributing to vital security efforts.
Kylo’s impact extended to complex investigations involving auto theft and organized crime, disrupting criminal activity throughout the region. He was a vital asset in bringing perpetrators to justice.
In October 2020, Kylo demonstrated exceptional bravery and skill in Mississauga. When a suspect fled after allegedly attempting to drive toward officers, Kylo tracked him down without incident, ensuring no one was harmed.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Kylo was known for his remarkably friendly demeanor. He wasn’t just an exceptional working dog; he was a beloved member of the Peel Regional Police family, radiating unmatched energy and enthusiasm.
