The first alarm sounded around 4 a.m. local time, jolting those asleep from their slumber. Passengers, many of them Singaporean citizens – 139 in total – were swiftly directed towards evacuation points as the crew battled the growing blaze. The fire originated in a lounge area on deck nine, quickly filling the ship with acrid smoke.

The body of the deceased crew member, an Indonesian national, has been respectfully transferred ashore, and the Indonesian embassy has been notified. Authorities have established a safety zone around the vessel, issuing warnings to other ships in the area.
