WIND POWER REVOLUTION IGNITES: Historic Port Deal Unleashed!

A pivotal moment has arrived for the Philippines’ burgeoning renewable energy sector. The nation’s first port dedicated to servicing offshore wind farms is set for a massive transformation in Mercedes, Camarines Norte, with a P2.27-billion redevelopment project now officially underway.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has awarded the contract to a joint venture between Khan Kon Chi Construction and Development Corp. and SB Construction Corp., marking the beginning of a new era for the country’s energy infrastructure. This initial phase will lay the groundwork for a facility uniquely equipped to support the growing offshore wind industry.

The project’s swift progression follows a recent auction conducted by the PPA, demonstrating a clear commitment to accelerating the development of renewable energy resources. Energy Undersecretary Giovanni Carlo J. Bacordo emphasized that Mercedes is currently the most advanced of three identified ports, fully funded and poised for leadership.

Khan Kon Chi Construction, a Davao-based engineering firm, and SB Construction, a general engineering contractor, will collaborate to bring this ambitious vision to life. The completion of this first phase will position Mercedes as the nation’s pioneering port capable of handling the specialized needs of offshore wind operations.

Looking ahead, a second phase of redevelopment is already planned for bidding later this year, further solidifying Mercedes’ role as a central hub. Simultaneously, the PPA is also focusing on Sta. Clara port in Batangas, envisioning it as a larger-scale facility with potential for manufacturing.

The Sta. Clara project, estimated to cost around P3.1 billion, is being structured as a public-private partnership due to its significant scale and investment requirements. A feasibility study is currently underway, with the port ultimately intended to serve as a crucial marshalling point for offshore wind components.

These strategic port developments are integral to the Philippines’ ambitious goal of harnessing offshore wind power by 2028. This push towards diversification is driven by a national imperative to lessen reliance on traditional fossil fuels and embrace a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
