YOU WON'T BELIEVE YOUR EYES.

YOU WON'T BELIEVE YOUR EYES.

GB Labrador’s comedy isn’t easily captured. It’s not about the jokes themselves, but the *way* he delivers them – a masterful performance of voice, timing, and subtle expression. Trying to recount his bits to friends often results in silence, a stark contrast to the roaring laughter he commands on stage.

The opportunity to “be there” arrives on March 14th with “Beta Days,” his hour-long comedy special at Ateneo de Manila University’s Arete Hyundai Hall. This isn’t just a show; it’s a recording for future release, a chance to preserve the ephemeral magic of a live performance.

A recent performance with Comedy Manila offered a glimpse into his unique style. He fearlessly roasted the event’s cause, launched into a skit involving Santa Claus, and shared stories of a mischievous upbringing. Then, unexpectedly, he picked up his guitar.

What followed was a daring set of songs tackling provocative subjects, tailored to the audience with playful improvisation. He even engaged with audience members, skillfully navigating potentially sensitive topics with wit and precision, culminating in a perfectly timed exit that left the crowd ecstatic.

Mr. Labrador’s comedic journey began in the unlikely setting of human resources departments within telecommunications companies. He found inspiration in the everyday absurdities of the workplace, transforming mundane experiences into relatable humor.

He transitioned to writing for television, crafting comedies for both adults and children. While TV writing presented creative challenges and restrictions, he found a liberating freedom in stand-up. “In stand-up, there are no restrictions,” he explained, appreciating the unfiltered expression the stage allowed.

After seven years of writing for TV, he took a leap of faith, quitting his day job to pursue comedy full-time. It was a period of sacrifice and unwavering support from his family, who sustained him even when his wardrobe consisted of a single, branded shirt.

He emphasizes that comedy is more than just performing; it’s a constant pursuit of opportunities. He founded Comedy Manila in 2013 not as an exclusive group, but as a production house dedicated to nurturing the burgeoning comedy scene in the Philippines.

His vision was to build a platform for comedians to develop their following and expand the audience for live comedy. He’s witnessed a remarkable shift in the scene, with a more diverse audience embracing the art form and a move away from traditional insult comedy towards observational humor.

The digital landscape presents both opportunities and challenges. While online content can broaden reach, he cautions comedians about the potential for misinterpretation and the need for careful consideration of what they share. Virality doesn’t always translate to ticket sales, a dynamic he’s eager to understand better.

What makes Manila such fertile ground for comedy? Mr. Labrador points to the city’s vibrant, often over-the-top reactions to life. “We focus on the wrong things, frequently, as a society,” he observed, highlighting the comedic potential in societal quirks.

He believes a comedian’s true strength lies in their unique perspective and personal connection to their material. “The emotions involved are only theirs…that when I tell the joke, no one can actually do it the same way I do.”

While he honed his skills through writing and observation, Mr. Labrador believes a natural comedic instinct is essential. “I believe it’s innate. It is natural in you to share something that will make someone laugh.”

He recalls finding joy in making his friends laugh long before he stepped onto a stage, a simple desire to bring happiness to those around him. That core motivation remains the driving force behind his comedy today.

Ultimately, GB Labrador’s comedy is an experience – a connection forged through shared laughter and a uniquely personal perspective. It’s a performance that demands to be witnessed, not just recounted.
