A tense amateur football match in Istanbul, Turkey, took an extraordinary turn when a seagull unexpectedly became a player on the field – and then a patient in need of urgent care.
During a crucial play-off final between Mevlanakapi Guzelhisar and Istanbul Yurdum Spor, disaster struck after just 22 minutes. A powerful goal kick from the Istanbul goalkeeper sent a seagull circling above plummeting to the ground with a sickening thud.
Play immediately halted as Istanbul captain Gani Catan sprang into action. Without hesitation, he raced towards the fallen bird, a wave of concern washing over the pitch as teammates gathered around.
In a moment few could have predicted, Catan began administering CPR to the injured seagull. He rhythmically compressed the bird’s tiny chest, a determined effort to restore its breathing.
His quick thinking appeared to work. Witnesses reported seeing the seagull begin to stir, its legs and eyes flickering with renewed life as Catan carefully carried it off the field.
“Something was falling and I realized it was a seagull,” Catan later explained. “The first thing that came to my mind was heart massage, because it couldn’t breathe, so I tried my luck.”
Commentators were equally stunned. One exclaimed, “Muhammet hit the seagull!” before describing the unprecedented scene unfolding: “They’re doing chest compressions on the seagull right now – a moment rarely seen in football history!”
News quickly spread that the seagull was recovering, reportedly regaining its ability to walk despite suffering wing damage. The medical team continued to provide care on the sidelines.
Though Istanbul Yurdum Spor ultimately lost the match, Catan remained resolute. “We missed out on the championship, but it’s a wonderful thing to have helped save a life,” he said. “This was more important than the championship.”
The incident served as a powerful reminder that compassion can transcend the boundaries of sport, and that even in the heat of competition, there’s always room for a moment of extraordinary kindness.
