George, a familiar face at West Wickham station, vanished last week in a shocking act – stolen right from his favorite spot. This wasn't a case of a runaway; witnesses saw a woman deliberately scoop him up and conceal him inside her shopping bag.
The black and white feline had become a local celebrity, known for his peculiar habit of warming the morning copies of the Metro newspaper. His sudden disappearance ignited a frantic search, leaving regulars and station staff deeply concerned.
George belongs to Steven Fletcher, a member of the Metro team, and was last seen near Elmer’s End station shortly after being taken from West Wickham around 2 pm on Thursday. The thief boarded a train with him, and was spotted disembarking a few minutes later.
Relief washed over everyone when Steven announced George had been found, safe and sound, having cleverly infiltrated a nearby home through a cat flap. He’d essentially moved in, making himself completely comfortable.
“He had a good night,” Steven shared, “and was absolutely ravenous when we arrived, but he’s certainly made up for lost time.” George devoured a hearty meal, clearly enjoying his unexpected adventure.
Now, George is enjoying an abundance of affection, including countless belly rubs and peaceful naps in a child’s play tent. A visit to the vet confirmed he was in good health, and he’s currently resting at home for a couple of days.
Steven anticipates George will be back at his post at the station by the end of the week, resuming his duties as the Metro’s official warmer. Despite not wearing a collar – he’s a notorious escape artist – George is microchipped, aiding in his safe return.
Local police are aware of the woman responsible for the theft and are monitoring the situation, ensuring George’s continued safety and peace of mind. The station, and George’s devoted fans, eagerly await his return.
