Don't overlook the power supply. A fan needs consistent power to operate. First, verify the connection between the fan and its power source within the laptop. If secure, inspect the power adapter and cable for any visible damage like fraying. Trying an alternate cable can quickly rule out a faulty power source, or test the adapter with another device.

Carefully examine these connectors for corrosion or physical damage. Outdated or corrupted drivers can create communication breakdowns between your operating system and the cooling fan. Access the Device Manager through your Control Panel, find the cooling fan section, and select “update driver.” Choose the automatic update option, or manually download the latest version from the manufacturer’s website for a more targeted approach.

Confirming your suspicions requires monitoring your CPU temperature. Applications like Core Temp and HWMonitor provide real-time data on core temperatures, CPU temperature, and historical highs and lows. Establishing a baseline of normal operating temperatures during typical use is crucial for identifying abnormal spikes that indicate a failing fan.

If these troubleshooting steps don’t resolve the issue, it’s time to consider professional help. A malfunctioning cooling fan can lead to irreversible damage, and attempting complex repairs without expertise could worsen the problem.
