GAMBLING GIANT'S SHOCK MOVE: Protecting Players OR Losing Billions?

GAMBLING GIANT'S SHOCK MOVE: Protecting Players OR Losing Billions?

A surge of over a million dollars is being directed towards safeguarding players as MGM Resorts and BetMGM dedicate resources to Problem Gambling Awareness Month. This isn't simply a gesture; it’s a comprehensive overhaul of player protections, fueled by new research and strategic partnerships.

The expansion isn’t limited to awareness campaigns. A substantial $450,000 is earmarked for the International Center for Responsible Gaming, launching a three-year study into the very psychology of sports betting. Researchers will delve into the decision-making processes of bettors, analyzing risk assessment and identifying early warning signs of potential issues.

Understanding the ‘why’ behind betting behavior is paramount. Stephen Martino, a leader in compliance at MGM Resorts, emphasized the need for data-driven insights to truly support patrons and communities as sports betting becomes increasingly accessible.

MGM Resorts and BetMGM expand responsible gaming investment nationwide this spring. MGM Resorts and BetMGM logos displayed side by side over a blurred background of poker chips and playing cards, including an ace of spades, representing casino and online gaming.

Beyond research, over $850,000 will bolster national and state organizations dedicated to prevention, treatment, and education. This includes continued support for the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling Conference, with council experts leading vital training sessions for MGM Resorts employees.

A visible shift is occurring both within casinos and on digital platforms. The GameSense program, known for its proactive approach, is expanding its presence, encouraging players to “take a time-out” and “set a budget” with readily available tools like QR codes and in-app resources.

Over 2,000 employees are now certified as GameSense advisors, equipped to engage in meaningful conversations with guests about responsible play. This represents a significant investment in a human-centered approach to player wellbeing.

Throughout March, BetMGM customers will receive targeted communications highlighting available responsible gaming tools. MGM Rewards members will also be asked for feedback, ensuring the company’s efforts are aligned with player perceptions and needs.

A new “Earn More. Play Smart.” campaign will directly integrate responsible gaming messaging into the MGM Rewards loyalty program, incentivizing mindful play. This innovative approach aims to normalize responsible behavior and reward players for making informed choices.

High-profile collaborations are also underway. BetMGM continues to feature hockey star Connor McDavid in its responsible gaming commercials, reaching a broad audience during major sporting events and within MGM properties.

Further strengthening its commitment, BetMGM has partnered with BetBlocker, expanding access to free gambling-blocking software. They’ve also updated their integrity policy to explicitly prohibit athlete harassment, demonstrating a commitment to ethical conduct.

Employee training is being enhanced through sessions led by EPIC Global Solutions, featuring individuals with lived experience of problem gambling. These powerful sessions offer invaluable perspectives and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those affected.
