Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, was left deeply impressed by a fleeting glimpse of talent during a Champions League clash. It wasn't a star name, but a young forward named Pio Esposito who caught his eye during a brief appearance for Inter Milan.
The impact was immediate. Despite a 3-1 defeat for Inter, Esposito’s energy and skill in his 27-minute cameo were enough to compel Arteta to a swift action. He immediately instructed sporting director Andrea Berta to investigate the young player, wanting a full assessment of his potential.
Arsenal had recently invested heavily in Viktor Gyokeres, a £64 million signing who was already proving his worth with 15 goals. Yet, Arteta was already looking ahead, identifying potential future reinforcements for his attack.
Reports suggest Esposito didn’t just impress – he “frightened and fascinated” Arteta. The young striker’s performance lingered in the manager’s thoughts long after the final whistle, sparking a determined effort to learn more about his availability.
During the match, Esposito was introduced as a substitute for Lautaro Martinez and immediately troubled Arsenal’s defense. Arteta reacted by substituting Cristhian Mosquera, who was struggling to contain the powerful 20-year-old forward.
Arteta’s urgency was clear. He immediately tasked Berta with contacting Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, to gauge Esposito’s potential transfer cost and whether a deal was even possible.

Having been with Inter’s academy since 2014, Esposito’s potential has been recognized for years. A successful loan spell at Spezia, where he scored 17 league goals, proved pivotal in his development and earned him a return to Inter’s first team.
That loan period transformed him. He returned to Inter a more polished and confident player, quickly adding seven goals across all competitions and solidifying his position as a rising star within the squad.
Inter secured Esposito’s future with a long-term contract, extending his stay until 2030 on a salary of around €1 million per season. Any club hoping to pry him away will need to significantly alter that equation.
Esposito has quickly become a favorite of Inter manager Cristian Chivu, who has praised his dedication and willingness to take responsibility. Chivu sees a player with immense potential and a strong desire to succeed.
“He wants to prove himself,” Chivu recently stated. “He wants to take responsibility, and I like that he follows me and wants to make this season what we all hope it can be.”
Chivu’s connection with Esposito runs deep. He jokingly remarked that he’s “practically grown up” alongside the young forward, recalling a time when Esposito barely reached his chest.
“I know his family, I know his background, his journey through the youth system,” Chivu explained. “He was an underage captain in my Inter Primavera team. I’m happy for him, just as I am for the rest of the team.”
