A shadow fell over a Saint John nursing home this winter, as police uncovered a series of disturbing assaults. A 69-year-old man now faces accusations of sexually assaulting fifteen vulnerable seniors over just three weeks.
The victims, ranging in age from their 70s to their 90s, endured these alleged attacks between December 26th and January 19th. Each individual, already facing the fragility of age, was subjected to a betrayal of trust within the walls of a place meant for care and security.
Police arrested the accused on Tuesday, releasing him with strict conditions while awaiting a court appearance on May 26th. Authorities are withholding his name to protect the ongoing legal process and the privacy of those involved.
The investigation revealed a heartbreaking connection: the accused is a family member of one of the nursing home residents. This detail adds another layer of complexity to an already devastating case, highlighting the intimate nature of the alleged crimes.
Detectives spent over a month meticulously piecing together the evidence, ultimately identifying all the victims and confirming that no other suspects are being sought. The investigation was described as exceptionally challenging, given the vulnerability of those harmed.
Police Chief Robert Bruce emphasized the dedication of his investigators, stating they worked tirelessly to bring the accused before the courts while prioritizing the dignity of the victims. The sensitivity of the case demanded a careful and respectful approach.
The initial investigation began in late January, with police announcing a sexual offence inquiry at a local senior-care facility. A suspect with an “affiliation” to the facility was identified early on, but the arrest came only after thorough and painstaking work.
While police have not publicly named the specific nursing home, correspondence from Loch Lomond Villa indicates their Village facility – a 100-bed home with four resident houses – is connected to the investigation. The Villa has assured families that the accused has been barred from the property since the investigation began.
Loch Lomond Villa CEO Ashley King acknowledged the deep concern felt by residents, families, and staff. The organization stated its unwavering commitment to supporting those impacted and maintaining the safety and well-being of everyone under their care.
The Villa continues to collaborate closely with the Saint John Police Force Family Protection Unit as the legal proceedings unfold. The focus remains on providing support and ensuring a secure environment for all residents.
