Chrome 145 update fixes several critical browser vulnerabilities

Chrome 145 update fixes several critical browser vulnerabilities

A surprising turn of events unfolded in the world of web browsing as Google bypassed the anticipated Chrome 146 release, instead delivering a significant update to Chrome 145. This isn't a typical incremental change; it’s being widely considered the final security fortification for this version.

The update, rolling out as versions 145.0.7632.159/160 for Windows and macOS, and 145.0.7632.159 for Linux, tackles a total of ten newly discovered security vulnerabilities. Crucially, Google reports that none of these weaknesses have been actively exploited by attackers in real-world scenarios – a reassuring note for users.

The vulnerabilities were brought to light through a collaborative effort, with nine being identified by dedicated external security researchers. The severity levels vary, with three classified as critical and the remaining seven posing a high risk to system security.

The most pressing concerns lie within the graphics processing realm. Critical vulnerabilities were pinpointed in Angle, Skia, and PowerVR – libraries essential for rendering visuals, particularly on Imagination Technologies’ GPUs. These flaws could potentially allow for malicious code execution.

Beyond the critical issues, several “high risk” vulnerabilities stem from what Google terms “inappropriate implementation” within core components like CSS and the V8 JavaScript engine. While the specifics remain somewhat opaque, these flaws represent potential avenues for exploitation.

Users on mobile platforms aren’t left behind. Chrome for Android 145.0.7632.159 and Chrome for iOS 146.0.7680.38 are also available, mirroring the security enhancements found in the desktop versions. The Extended Stable Channel for Windows and macOS has been updated to Chromium version 144.0.7559.236.

Typically, Chrome handles updates seamlessly in the background. However, you can proactively check for the latest version by navigating to Help > About Google Chrome within the browser’s menu. Ensuring you’re running the most current iteration is a vital step in maintaining online safety.

The planned release of Chrome 146 has taken an unexpected pause. Google initially deployed it to a small percentage of users as a “release candidate” – a testing phase before wider distribution. A full rollout was expected this week, but has been delayed.

Adding to the intrigue, Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, recently made a claim regarding the future cadence of Chrome releases. It stated a shift to two-week release cycles starting in 2026. However, this information appears to be inaccurate, at least for the first half of the year.

According to the current roadmap, the accelerated two-week cycle won’t begin until August 2026, impacting versions 152 and 153. This timeline suggests Chrome could potentially reach version 160 by the end of the year, signaling a faster pace of innovation and security updates in the future.
