Diane Youdale, the iconic “Jet” from the originalGladiators, remembers the thrill of the arena with a fondness that spans decades. Her athletic prowess captivated audiences from 1992 to 1996, and now, over 25 years later, she’s returning to the world of superhuman competition with the liveGladiators Experience.
The recent BBC reboot, hosted by Bradley and Barney Walsh, has reignited the passion for the show, drawing millions of viewers and introducing a new generation to the spectacle. Youdale, alongside fellow legends Lightning, Hunter, and Saracen, will be part of the immersive experience at the NEC Birmingham, encouraging participants of all abilities.
But as she steps back into this familiar arena, Youdale has a thoughtful observation about the current series. She believes one element is noticeably absent, a perspective born from her own experiences and a desire for broader representation.
Youdale’s wish isn’t for more strength or spectacle, but for greater visibility for the LGBTQ+ community. She points to Amanda Wah, a standout contestant from last year’s show, as a prime example of talent and a catalyst for conversation.
Wah herself expressed a desire to see a visibly LGBTQ+ Gladiator, and Youdale wholeheartedly agrees. She feels the show already boasts glamour, strength, compelling characters, and a balance of heroes and villains – but this piece is missing.
Youdale’s advocacy comes from a place of personal understanding. Having navigated her own journey with sexuality later in life, she speaks of falling in love with a person, not a gender, a connection she found unexpectedly in a Tesco supermarket.
For Youdale, the inclusion isn’t about checking a box, but about reflecting the diversity of the world and enriching the already vibrant tapestry ofGladiators. It’s about ensuring everyone feels represented within the arena’s powerful embrace.
TheGladiators Experiencepromises a chance to live out the dream, testing speed, strength, and heart. It opens May 1st and runs through August 31st at the NEC Birmingham, offering a new chapter in the legacy of this beloved competition.
