A terrifying scene unfolded in the heart of Glasgow as a massive fire consumed a building adjacent to the city’s bustling Central Station, triggering widespread travel chaos and a dramatic emergency response.
The blaze, which erupted in a vape shop on Union Street, quickly escalated, sending plumes of smoke billowing across the skyline and forcing the suspension of train services from the station’s high-level platforms. Scotland’s largest city ground to a halt as firefighters battled the inferno.
More than sixty firefighters confronted the intense heat and flames, working tirelessly for over sixteen hours to contain the rapidly spreading fire. The building, a historic structure dating back to 1851, suffered a catastrophic partial collapse, its domed roof giving way under the strain.
Thankfully, despite the scale of the destruction, no casualties were reported. A nearby hotel was swiftly evacuated as a precautionary measure, ensuring the safety of its guests amidst the unfolding crisis.
As of this morning, the fire has been scaled back, though nine appliances, including specialized high-reach vehicles, remain on scene, diligently working to extinguish remaining hotspots. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and advising nearby residents to keep windows closed.
The disruption to rail travel has been significant, with Avanti West Coast strongly advising passengers to postpone journeys to or from Glasgow Central. ScotRail has warned travelers that completing their journeys is not guaranteed, urging them to make alternative arrangements.
Local MSP Paul Sweeney described the scene as a “massive blow” to Union Street, particularly given ongoing restoration efforts in the area. The affected building, formerly the renowned Forsyth department store, had recently been sold for nearly £10 million and repurposed for office and retail use.
The cause of the devastating fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation, as authorities work to determine the origin and circumstances surrounding this dramatic event.
