A dedicated healthcare worker, originally from the Philippines, was subjected to a brutal and racially charged attack in a Halifax park, leaving her deeply shaken and unable to return to work.
The incident unfolded on August 28th when a dog belonging to Michael and Fyona Bairstow approached a child. When the healthcare worker, identified as Apple Moorhouse, politely suggested the dog be leashed, the situation rapidly escalated into violence and hateful abuse.
Michael Bairstow shockingly commanded his dog to “get her, kill,” and then physically assaulted Apple, throwing a bottle of water at her. When she attempted to walk away, Fyona Bairstow violently grabbed her by the ponytail, yanking her head backwards.
The attack wasn’t merely physical; it was steeped in racism. Apple recounted being bombarded with racist remarks, the couple repeatedly attempting to turn the conversation towards immigration and even using the deeply offensive term “slave.”
A bystander who bravely intervened to defend Apple was also attacked by Michael Bairstow, punched in the face after he aggressively demanded she stay out of it, questioning her motives for defending an immigrant.
The ordeal has left Apple profoundly traumatized. She described feeling constant anxiety and upset whenever she reflects on the event, emphasizing the significant impact of racism and the urgent need for it to be addressed.
“I feel anxious, obviously, every time that I think back, I feel upset,” Apple stated after the hearing. “It’s a big thing, racism, and it needs to be dealt with.”
Both Michael and Fyona Bairstow pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault at Bradford Magistrates’ Court. Michael also admitted to the assault on the intervening woman. The case has been adjourned for a pre-sentence report, leaving Apple awaiting justice.
Despite her dedication to caring for others, Apple expressed a sense of disillusionment, stating that the experience validated her decision to leave the area. “I love what I do, but some people aren't worth my time or my care,” she shared.
Apple’s story serves as a stark reminder of the prejudice that still exists and the devastating consequences it can have on individuals who contribute so much to society.
