STONE SHATTERED: The Collision That Changes EVERYTHING.

STONE SHATTERED: The Collision That Changes EVERYTHING.

A remarkable artistic dialogue has begun, born from an unexpected connection between two masters of different mediums. Ramon Orlina, renowned glass sculptor, and David Kaufman, a Filipino-Spanish architect and stone artisan, have joined forces in an exhibit titled “Rebirth.” The display showcases a daring fusion of glass and stone, a first in Philippine art history.

The collaboration began not in a studio, but on a project site in Batangas. Mr. Orlina, seeking bronze for a large-scale statue of Our Lady of Caysasay, found a reliable supplier in Mr. Kaufman. This initial transaction sparked a creative conversation, leading to a shared vision of pushing artistic boundaries.

Mr. Orlina, captivated by Mr. Kaufman’s work, saw a path toward modernizing his own artistic expression. He extended an invitation – a gesture Mr. Kaufman described as a “miracle,” given Mr. Orlina’s stature in the art world. The goal wasn’t simply to combine materials, but to create a true artistic exchange, allowing each artist’s voice to resonate within the final piece.

Mr. Kaufman brings a unique perspective to stone sculpting, informed by his architectural background. He doesn’t view stone as merely a building material, but as a canvas for artistic expression – a medium to “paint with stone,” as he describes it. The twelve stone artworks featured in “Rebirth” embody this philosophy, challenging conventional notions of texture and vibrancy.

These individual pieces, created in a concentrated two-week period, reflect a minimalist, Zen-inspired aesthetic. They are presented as canvases themselves, showcasing the natural beauty and intricate patterns within the stone. But the true centerpiece of the exhibit is the collaborative sculpture, a prototype born from experimentation and mutual learning.

The process of uniting glass and stone proved challenging, requiring innovative techniques in lamination and joinery. Both artists acknowledge that the prototype is not yet fully realized, with ongoing refinements planned. Lay Ann Orlina, Mr. Orlina’s wife, played a crucial role, ensuring the work met the exacting standards of their artistic vision.

While the specifics of their improvements remain closely guarded, one thing is certain: this is not a singular event. Mr. Orlina confidently predicts that the world will see more Kaufman-Orlina sculptures in the future, continuing this exciting exploration of form, texture, and artistic collaboration.

“Rebirth” by David Kaufman was on display until May 8th at MC Home Depot, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, offering a glimpse into a groundbreaking artistic partnership.
