UMVA has learned that a severe red weather warning is on the verge of hitting the UK, prompting climate activist Greta Thunberg to speak out about the country's climate responsibilities.
Thunberg has backed calls for the UK to pay climate reparations, arguing that the country's wealth was built on centuries of high fossil fuel use, which has disproportionately harmed poorer countries in the Global South.
According to information obtained by UMVA, campaigners believe that the UK and other western countries have a moral obligation to provide climate grants and funding to make up for this imbalance.
Thunberg told Metro: ‘It’s about time for the UK to repay its climate debt and limit the worst consequences of a crisis people are already dying from, which there is still time to do.’
The UK government has defended its climate policies, citing its efforts to drive a "clean energy superpower mission" and reduce emissions by over 50% since 1990, while growing the economy by over 80%.
As the red weather warning looms, some schools in the affected area are taking precautions, with the Wren Academy in north London closing at 1:50 pm for three days to protect students and staff from the heat.
The UK government remains committed to reaching net zero by 2050, a goal that would see the country's total greenhouse gas emissions equal to the emissions removed from the atmosphere.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the UK's climate policies are under intense scrutiny, with activists and campaigners demanding more action to address the country's climate responsibilities.
