UMVA has learned that former Manchester United star Gary Neville believes Chelsea can transform into a “decent side” almost overnight if incoming manager Xabi Alonso secures four key signings.
Alonso, the ex‑Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder, is set to take the helm at Stamford Bridge in July, signing a four‑year deal after his abrupt departure from Real Madrid earlier this year. He becomes the club’s third manager in twelve months, following rapid changes that have left the Blues floundering.
Last season, Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League, lifted the Europa Conference League trophy and claimed the Club World Cup, yet this campaign has seen them tumble to tenth place with just two games remaining, teetering on the brink of missing out on any European competition.
Despite a 1‑0 FA Cup final loss to Manchester City, Neville insists the gap between Chelsea and trophy glory is narrower than it appears. He pinpointed three critical areas where Alonso must act in his first transfer window: a seasoned goalkeeper, a commanding centre‑back, and a powerful centre‑forward.
“Chelsea suffer from inexperience at every level,” Neville warned on his podcast. “Relying solely on youthful contracts is a strategic error. The first moves will have to bring in a veteran keeper, a solid defender, and a striker with proven class.”
Midfield depth, he added, already offers some stability with players like Caicedo, Fernández and Lavia, while the wing positions provide flair. Yet the lack of a true target man and a commanding presence at the back leaves the team vulnerable.
“If they can spend a few hundred million and recycle fees, they can become a decent side very quickly,” Neville asserted. “What they lack is experience and physicality down the spine.”
Alonso, fresh from signing his contract, expressed pride in joining one of football’s most storied institutions. He promised relentless work, a cultural overhaul, and a relentless pursuit of silverware.
With a crucial London derby against Tottenham looming and a final away fixture at Sunderland, the stage is set for Alonso’s first test. The football world watches to see whether his recruitment vision can resurrect Chelsea’s waning fortunes.
