My outdoor space is a sanctuary, a single precious area where I can exist between indoors and out. As someone who finds solace in quiet moments – and admittedly, prefers the company of cats to people – this small deck is vitally important. It’s a space I’ve invested in, striving to keep it comfortable and well-maintained.
A few years back, I replaced some worn decking, but the new pieces didn’t quite match the original color. A coat of paint solved that, creating a uniform look. However, a particularly harsh winter took its toll, leaving the deck looking tired and in need of revitalization.
It was time for a refresh. This time, I opted for a lighter shade and began gathering supplies, but I quickly abandoned the traditional tools. Forget rollers and brushes; my plan involved a simple push broom and a surprisingly effective bender pad.
Painting a deck with a broom might sound unconventional, but it proved remarkably efficient. A standard 10-inch push broom effortlessly covered two deck planks at a time, forcing the paint into every groove and crevice far better than a roller ever could. Fewer passes meant faster, more thorough coverage.
The bender pad was the other key to success. This flexible tool slipped easily into the tight spaces between the deck boards, delivering a clean coat where a brush would struggle. It eliminated the messy, awkward maneuvering typically required for those hard-to-reach areas.
The entire project, from start to finish, took just about an hour. First, a thorough cleaning with a stiff brush removed accumulated dirt and loose paint. Once completely dry, I began applying the paint with the broom, focusing on flexible bristles for optimal coverage.
I alternated between painting the deck surfaces and using the bender pad to address the spaces between the boards. The pad smoothly coated the sides, creating a crisp, even finish. Looking back, starting with the sides would have been smarter, but that’s a lesson learned for next time.
The combination of broom and bender pad transformed a potentially tedious chore into a quick and satisfying project. If you’re facing a deck painting or staining task, consider ditching the traditional tools and embracing this surprisingly effective method. The results speak for themselves.
The finished deck, bathed in the fresh, lighter color, feels revitalized and inviting. It’s a small space, but now it’s a truly renewed sanctuary, ready for quiet contemplation and feline companionship.
