A 26-year-old man from Hamilton is facing serious charges following a shooting in the city’s north end over the weekend. The incident unfolded late Friday night near Oxford Street, prompting a swift response from Hamilton Police’s shooting response team.
While no one was struck by gunfire, a robbery victim sustained minor injuries during an assault connected to the shooting. Investigators believe this was a deliberate act, not a random occurrence, and that two individuals fled the scene immediately after.
Police executed a search warrant at an apartment on Oxford Street, believed to be linked to the incident. A significant police presence remained at the location as officers meticulously searched for evidence.
Yonis Mohamed was arrested Saturday and charged with robbery with a firearm, assault with a weapon, and violating a probation order. The investigation, however, continues as authorities seek another suspect.
The second suspect is described as a Black male, likely in his mid-20s to early 30s, standing between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8 with an average build. He was last seen wearing a dark blue sweater and dark pants.
Separately, police are investigating another shooting that occurred early Saturday morning on King Street. Spent shell casings were discovered, but as of now, no victim or intended target has been identified.
The investigation into the King Street shooting is ongoing, with police requesting anyone with information, particularly surveillance footage from between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., to come forward.
Tragedy struck early Sunday morning on Hamilton Mountain with a single-vehicle collision on Claremont Drive. Both the driver and passenger, Hamilton residents, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the Claremont Drive crash, as well as anyone with video footage from the area around 4:40 a.m., to assist with the investigation.
In a separate incident, Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is investigating a vehicle pursuit in Lindsay. The pursuit ended in a crash that left a man and a woman with serious injuries.
The incident began when a Kawartha Lakes Police officer responded to a 911 call early Sunday morning. A vehicle fled when the officer attempted a traffic stop, ultimately colliding with two parked vehicles.
The SIU is seeking witnesses to the pursuit on Victoria Street, between Glenelg and Russell Streets West, to help reconstruct the events leading to the crash.
