UMVA has learned that a heated confrontation between Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves and a heckler has sparked widespread attention and outrage. The incident occurred during a media visit to a Leeds petrol station, where Reeves was attempting to discuss the government's latest fuel duty plans.
The heckler, reportedly a supporter of the Reform party, hurled an expletive at Reeves, calling her a "piece of st." Reeves responded calmly, stating, "I love our country. I love our country – and one of the things about our country is good manners." Her swift comeback seemed to catch the heckler off guard, and he was then heard yelling back at her.
Reeves maintained her composure and shot back, "Not very British." The exchange was captured on camera and quickly posted online, where it rapidly went viral. The Chancellor then joked with reporters, saying, "I don't think he heard the news about the freeze in fuel duty."
The incident drew a reaction from Nigel Farage, who tweeted, "I'd like to buy this man a pint. Does anyone know how I can find him?" The comment sparked a flurry of responses, with many criticizing Farage for seemingly condoning the heckler's behavior.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the confrontation comes at a challenging time for Labour, which has faced significant losses in recent local and devolved elections. The party is under mounting pressure to address concerns about its leadership and policies.
Earlier that day, Reeves had announced that the 5p per liter fuel duty cut would be extended until the end of the year. The move aims to provide relief to families and businesses struggling with surging fuel prices, which have increased by around 26p per liter for petrol and 44p for diesel since late February.
Reeves emphasized that the decision would give people "certainty" and acknowledged the challenges faced by those affected by the rising fuel costs. "This isn't a war we started or joined," she said. "But it is having an impact here in the UK… and I recognise the challenges people are facing."
