WhatsApp is introducing a significant update to its platform, allowing users to add others without having to share their phone numbers. This change is expected to enhance user privacy, particularly in situations where individuals may not want to divulge their phone numbers, such as when meeting new people or participating in group chats.
The update, which is set to launch later this year, will introduce usernames to the platform. Users will be able to reserve their preferred username starting this week, and the feature will work similarly to usernames on other messaging and social media platforms. This means that users will no longer need to share their phone numbers to connect with others, adding an extra layer of privacy to the platform.
The introduction of usernames is designed to make WhatsApp more private, with no directory to browse and no suggestions for users to discover. To initiate contact, others will need to know a user's exact username. Additionally, an optional username key can be added, providing an extra level of security to prevent unauthorized users from adding others to their contacts.
The rollout of usernames is expected to occur gradually over the coming months, with users receiving alerts when the feature becomes available in their region. Once enabled, usernames will replace phone numbers when making new connections. Users can claim their username by going to the Settings section in the mobile app and selecting Account > Username, although this option may not be available to all users immediately.
Certain usernames, such as those of celebrities and politicians, have already been reserved. For users who are unsure about their username, a generator tool will be available to provide suggestions. The ability to reserve usernames is expected to open up starting this week, allowing users to secure their preferred username before others can claim it.
