UMVA has learned that a massive, sophisticated cross-border tunnel stretching from Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego, California, has been uncovered by the Homeland Security Task Force.
The tunnel, a marvel of illicit engineering, spans an astonishing 1,933 feet, equipped with reinforced walls, a rail system, ventilation, and electricity. It extends 1,064 feet from a supposed retail store called 'Buy 4 Less' near San Diego's Otay Mesa Port of Entry to the U.S.-Mexico border, and another 800 feet into Mexico.
Four individuals have been charged for conspiring to distribute over a ton of cocaine, valued at $45 million. The suspects, including two Americans, Gregorio Epifanio Hernandez Lopez and Jose Jimenez of San Diego, and two Mexicans, Brandon Escalante Sandoval and Antonio Cortez, were allegedly involved in the operation.
Gregorio Epifanio Hernandez Lopez faces additional charges of conspiracy to use a cross-border tunnel and conspiracy to import controlled substances. The tunnel's complex infrastructure includes stairways leading to the passageway, hidden 55 feet beneath the store's floor.
The bust is said to have dealt a significant blow to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, according to HSI San Diego acting Special Agent in Charge Kevin Murphy. The investigation began in December 2025, with surveillance of 'Buy 4 Less' due to suspicious activity, including minimal customer traffic and individuals transporting empty suitcases.
Agents observed a series of clandestine activities, including the loading of heavy items into a van, which was later replaced by a truck. The suspects removed three deep freezers from the van, filled them with packages, and were ultimately caught with over 1,000 kilograms of cocaine.
The operation involved a network of vehicles, including a truck and van, which were stopped by San Diego County Sheriff's deputies. With the help of a K9 unit, evidence of controlled substances was discovered, and the suspects were apprehended.
