HAMILTON SCAMMER TARGETS ELDERS: POLICE HUNTING NOW!

HAMILTON SCAMMER TARGETS ELDERS: POLICE HUNTING NOW!

A chilling wave of deception has targeted vulnerable seniors in Hamilton, as police investigate a particularly cruel fraud known as the “grandparent scam.” On March 30th, an elderly resident received a phone call that would unravel their peace of mind – a call from someone posing as a beloved grandchild in desperate need of help.

The caller spun a harrowing tale of arrest, expertly manipulating the victim with fabricated legal emergencies. Under immense emotional pressure, the senior was convinced to withdraw a substantial amount of cash, intended to secure bail for their supposed grandchild. A strict, and false, “gag order” was imposed, isolating the victim and preventing them from seeking verification.

Later that afternoon, a courier arrived at the victim’s home, dispatched to collect the money. A man approached the residence on foot, collected the funds, and disappeared, heading east on Beach Road toward Gage Avenue. This calculated act left the victim devastated and financially vulnerable.

Hamilton cops are looking for this man in connection with the so-called 'grandparent scam'

Police are now meticulously reviewing surveillance footage from the area, hoping to identify the suspect. He is described as a male in his 30s, with brown skin, a medium build, dark hair, and a noticeable dark beard. He was last seen wearing dark pants, a dark long-sleeved sweater, and brown shoes with distinctive white soles.

This case isn’t isolated. Authorities warn that these scams thrive on creating a sense of urgency and exploiting emotional connections. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, preying on the trust and compassion of seniors across the country, costing Canadians billions annually.

The key to protecting yourself and your loved ones is simple: pause and verify. If you receive a call claiming a grandchild is in trouble, resist the pressure to act immediately. Hang up and contact the family member directly using a known, trusted phone number. Never reveal personal information or send money without independent confirmation.

Anyone with information regarding the Hamilton incident is urged to contact the Hamilton Police crimes against seniors unit at 905-540-5155 or Detective-Constable Phil Poirier directly at the same number. Confidentiality is assured, and anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

This isn’t just about money; it’s about protecting the emotional well-being and security of our most vulnerable community members. Vigilance and open communication are the strongest defenses against these predatory schemes.
