Tragedy struck in the Essex countryside when a light aircraft crashed in a field just outside High Ongar on Tuesday.
The remains of the plane were discovered in the field, with police and emergency services quickly responding to the scene. An Essex Police spokesman confirmed that the incident occurred at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, June 30, involving a small aircraft in a field at Mill Lane, Ongar.
A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concern about the incident, saying, "There was a police car blocking off the road but nobody would tell us what happened. We couldn't see the plane from where we are. It is a good job it didn't hit any houses." The neighbour also noted that the nearby North Weald airfield had previously been quiet and that the incident was unprecedented in the area.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has dispatched inspectors to the scene to investigate the cause of the crash. Essex Police have sealed off the area as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police have urged residents to avoid Mill Lane while the investigation continues, thanking them for their patience and understanding. DCS Morgan Cronin stated, "This is a serious incident, and we understand it will cause concern in the local community. We are working closely with emergency service partners to respond and ensure the area is safe." A visible police presence will be maintained as the incident is dealt with.
The local community has expressed concern and support for those affected by the incident. St Mary's church released a statement saying, "We are aware of the incident involving a light aircraft near High Ongar today. We will continue to pray as more information becomes available." The community is coming together to offer support and condolences to those involved.
