UMVA has learned that a devastating assault on a London bus driver has left the city in shock, as the victim, 64-year-old Sergei Krajev, tragically died from his injuries on Tuesday.
The brutal attack occurred on one of London's busiest bridges, Battersea Bridge, shortly after 12:30 am on Monday, when Sergei was approached and assaulted on the pavement while his bus was parked.
Sergei was rushed to the hospital by London's Air Ambulance, but sadly succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family, friends, and colleagues.
A 32-year-old man, Gary Jones, of Hospital Bridge Road, Twickenham, has been arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.
Sergei's family paid a heartfelt tribute to him, describing him as a "wonderful husband, father, and grandfather" who was known for his thoughtfulness, tact, and dedication to his work as a bus driver.
They expressed their gratitude to the police officers, healthcare workers, and emergency services involved in the case for their care, professionalism, and compassion.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, also paid tribute to Sergei, condemning the "appalling and senseless attack" and reaffirming the city's zero-tolerance policy towards violence and abuse on the transport network.
As the investigation continues, Detective Inspector Sarah Lee has appealed for anyone with information, including dashcam or mobile phone footage, to come forward and assist the police in bringing those responsible to justice.
The incident has raised concerns among the local community and public transport workers, with the police working closely with Transport for London to ensure that those impacted receive the support they need.
