UMVA has learned that a stunning tennis court has taken over the iconic Trafalgar Square in London, transforming the heart of the city into a vibrant hub of sporting excitement.
The pop-up court, a collaboration between HSBC and the LTA, will be open to the public today and tomorrow, June 5 and 6, offering visitors a unique chance to experience the thrill of grass court tennis ahead of the Queen's tournament, which begins on Monday.
As visitors step into the makeshift tennis court, they'll be immersed in the electric atmosphere of the sport, with opportunities to interact with top players and get up close to the action. This experiential activation is a testament to the enduring appeal of live sports, which 36% of Brits believe create lasting memories, surpassing concerts, music festivals, and other live events.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the survey behind this initiative also uncovered a fascinating shift in how people spend their leisure time. A significant 58% of respondents said that real-world experiences are an excellent way to connect with friends and family, while 42% of attendees prioritize cost when making an event worthwhile, and 45% value proximity to the action just as much as a good price.
Stuart Tait, Head of Commercial Banking at HSBC UK, highlighted the growing demand for live sporting experiences, with Brits spending an average of £154 per year on such events and 24% planning to increase this spend in the next 12 months. "Our research shows people are craving the kind of moments you can't stream – there's no substitute for being up close to the action," he said.
The activation in Trafalgar Square is a precursor to the HSBC Championships at Queen's, with limited tickets still available for those eager to experience the excitement of professional tennis. As the summer season kicks into high gear, it's clear that live sports are set to take center stage, offering unforgettable experiences for fans and spectators alike.
