Gemini ROAD TESTED: AI Blew My Mind!

Gemini ROAD TESTED: AI Blew My Mind!

A significant shift is happening within Google Maps. The integration of Gemini, first announced last November, is now rolling out to more users on both Android and iOS, fundamentally changing how you interact with the app while traveling.

Forget the familiar voice of Google Assistant. Saying “hey Google” now summons Gemini, unlocking a more sophisticated and conversational experience. This isn’t just about finding directions; it’s about having an intelligent companion for your journey.

The first test drive, using both the Android app and Android Auto, revealed Gemini’s potential. It proved remarkably reliable in handling navigation requests, swiftly adjusting destinations and adding stops with simple voice commands.

Asking about estimated arrival times, current traffic conditions, or the next turn felt natural and intuitive. Gemini effortlessly provided details on weather forecasts at your destination and even summarized reviews and ratings for points of interest.

Voice control proved particularly useful. Changing destinations mid-route was far simpler than navigating the Android Auto touchscreen. However, returning to the main navigation view after a search proved tricky; Gemini struggled with the command “go back to the navigation view.”

Clear and deliberate speech is key. While generally accurate, Gemini occasionally stumbled over place names. It did, however, demonstrate impressive contextual awareness, remembering “the church” after its full name was initially provided.

Google Maps and Gemini

Gemini’s knowledge isn’t limitless. A request for a more scenic route highlighted its reliance on available data. Despite this, it consistently offered helpful suggestions and proactively asked if further assistance was needed, mirroring the experience within the standalone Gemini app.

The integration extends beyond simple directions. Gemini delivers the full breadth of its capabilities within Google Maps and Android Auto, answering questions about current events, TV shows, and music with surprising accuracy.

While mostly reliable, occasional “hallucinations” surfaced – like a claim about a non-existent Galaxy S26. Nevertheless, Gemini accurately explained road regulations and consistently reminded the driver to focus on the road.

Google describes the experience as having a “knowledgeable friend” in the passenger seat, and that’s a fitting analogy. Though the conversation can sometimes feel a little formal, the overall effect is remarkably helpful.

Gemini seamlessly controls music playback, finding songs, artists, and playlists within apps like YouTube Music and Spotify. While generally smooth, occasional hiccups occurred, requiring repeated commands to stop music or fully switch to other audio apps like Pocket Casts.

Perhaps most impressively, Gemini provides access to emails, calendar appointments, and incoming messages while driving. Receiving and responding to texts without taking your eyes off the road is a genuine safety enhancement.

Despite a few minor bugs, Gemini in Google Maps is a genuinely impressive advancement. The transition from Google Assistant feels complete, delivering a polished and remarkably useful experience for drivers.

A stable cellular connection is crucial to unlock Gemini’s full potential, as it relies on web access for many of its features. But when connected, it transforms Google Maps from a navigation tool into a powerful, intelligent travel companion.
