The Seine River near Paris became an unexpected rescue zone Thursday, as a bus plunged into its waters. A trainee driver, nearing the completion of her practical training, was at the wheel when the vehicle left the road in a dramatic turn of events.
The incident began with a collision – the bus struck a parked car, sending both vehicles careening towards the riverbank. Instead of navigating a crucial turn, the bus continued forward, dragging the car with it before entering the Seine.
A massive emergency response was immediately launched. Over ninety firefighters, specialized divers, and emergency personnel converged on the scene, supported by boats and a helicopter circling overhead. The scale of the operation was described by witnesses as overwhelming, a feeling that “every firefighter in the department” had responded.
Fortunately, all four individuals on board the bus were rescued from the water. Bystanders initially attempted to help by throwing life rings, quickly followed by the coordinated efforts of the professional rescue teams. Dramatic images captured the scene: the bus partially submerged, figures clinging to its roof, and crews working tirelessly in the river below.
Investigators are currently working to determine the exact cause of the crash. Initial tests have ruled out the influence of drugs or alcohol, leaving authorities to focus on other potential factors that contributed to the accident.
The recovery operation was a feat of engineering in itself. Large cranes were deployed to carefully extract the submerged bus from the river, a process monitored from above by the circling helicopter. The incident, which occurred in Juvisy-sur-Orge, just twelve miles south of Paris, has prompted an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
