STOP Painting Stairs The Hard Way—This Tool Changes EVERYTHING!

STOP Painting Stairs The Hard Way—This Tool Changes EVERYTHING!

I’ve painted a surprising number of staircases in my life – both inside and out. There’s something uniquely satisfying about transforming a staircase, and often, a fresh coat of paint is the quickest path to a dramatic change. When we moved into our home, the stairs were covered in a truly dreadful green carpet. It was the first thing to go.

Initially, I planned to simply paint the stairs as a temporary fix. But we ended up loving the painted look so much, it stayed. Now, after years of use, the paint was looking worn, and it was time for a refresh. We decided to add a touch of contrast by painting the risers a lighter color – a small change with a big impact.

This project presented the perfect opportunity to utilize a favorite painting shortcut: a wall edging pad. I can’t recall who first showed me this technique, but it drastically speeds up the process. Painting stairs, with all their angles and corners, traditionally meant endless painter’s tape and a strained wrist from meticulous brushwork.

The edging pad eliminates the need for tape and saves considerable effort. It’s a game-changer for anyone tackling a staircase. It allows for clean, precise lines without the tedious prep work. The difference in time and energy saved is remarkable.

Before starting, the stairs clearly needed attention. Years of foot traffic had taken their toll. I gathered my supplies, including the Shur-Line edging pad – the 7-inch size is ideal for risers, and the swivel holder locks securely at any angle. A refill pad was also a smart addition.

I also picked up a tube of painter’s caulk to address any gaps that had developed over time. While the edging pad minimizes tape, a small amount was still included for tricky areas. A few cut brushes were on hand as backup, anticipating the challenges posed by the stairs’ uneven surfaces.

Primer, a paint tray, and paint matching the wall color completed the collection. With everything prepared, I began. The edging pad is remarkably simple to use. The black button locks the pad at the desired angle, easily adjusted with a thumb press. A quick release tab allows for easy pad changes.

Loading the pad with primer, I pressed out any excess. The key is to avoid drips and maintain control. Then, simply place the pad against the riser and move it horizontally. The rectangular shape creates a straight, sharp line instantly, eliminating the need for careful cutting or taping.

The pad’s design minimizes brushstrokes and allows you to work directly to the edge, something difficult to achieve with a roller. For tight corners, the pad can be removed from the holder for greater flexibility and control. It takes a little practice, but the speed and efficiency are undeniable.

The result? The risers look remarkably neat and clean – all without a single strip of tape. I estimate I saved at least an hour of work using this method. The stairs, though aged and imperfect, now have a fresh, updated look. It’s a small change that makes a significant difference.

The finished product is a testament to the power of a simple tool and a clever technique. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most effective solutions are also the most straightforward.
