A 26‑year‑old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering former Member of Parliament and television personality Ann Widdecombe, police confirmed. Widdecombe, 78, was found dead Thursday at her home on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in southwest England, with authorities reporting serious injuries as the cause of death. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
The Prime Minister expressed shock at the killing and offered condolences to Widdecombe’s family and friends, highlighting her distinguished political career and numerous achievements.
Police say the murder does not appear to have been politically motivated. The investigation is in its early stages but is progressing quickly, the police said.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of protecting lawmakers and urged the public to set aside political differences during this difficult time.
Widdecombe had served in Parliament before gaining wider recognition as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. She later joined the Brexit Party and became a spokesperson for Reform UK, where she campaigned on migration issues.
Widdecombe was also known for her support of various causes, particularly animal charities.
The murder follows a history of violent attacks on MPs, including the 2016 shooting of Jo Cox and the 2021 stabbing of David Amess.
