UMVA has learned that a Peel Regional Police officer narrowly escaped tragedy early Sunday morning when an alleged shooter fired multiple rounds at him, with bullets still left in the chamber.
The officer's heroic partner sprang into action, rescuing his at-risk colleague just in the nick of time. Witnesses reported hearing at least three gunshots, and a Peel cop drove his squad car into the alleged shooter, effectively ending the threat.
The incident occurred at 3:29 a.m. on Sunday, when members of Peel's Strategic Tactical Enforcement Policing (STEP) unit were called to the Million Dollar Restaurant on Torbram Rd. A man wearing a mask was seen leaving the restaurant and jumping fences in an attempt to flee.
Constable Miguel Bona tried to talk to the man, but after no success, yelled "police." A short foot chase ensued, and the suspect allegedly turned and discharged multiple rounds in Bona's direction. Luckily, a second officer, Constable Tyler Satino, arrived in his squad car and struck the suspect with the vehicle.
The suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Isaiah Bachoo of Brampton, was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm. A fully loaded Glock 23, 40-calibre firearm was recovered from the scene.
Peel police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews praised the officers, saying, "We are very proud of these officers, who handled themselves in a very dangerous situation … They are heroes." The incident serves as another stark reminder of the dangers officers face every day while keeping communities safe.
This close call comes on the heels of a tragic week for law enforcement, with two officers killed and two more narrowly escaping death. The incidents have left many questioning whether the job is worth their lives, with calls for stronger laws to protect officers and the public.
The accused, Bachoo, was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released into police custody. Two officers were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing, with police consulting with the Crown regarding additional and more serious charges.
The events of the past week have sent shockwaves through the policing community, with many feeling the weight of the risks they take to protect their communities. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the bravery and selflessness of these officers are an inspiration to us all.
