A court artist rendered a sketch of Axel Rudakubana during a preparatory hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, illustrating the defendant’s presence before the trial began.
Rudakubana, convicted of a fatal stabbing in Southport, carried out the attack with meticulous planning intended to maximize societal distress.
Legal authorities noted that offenders who pose a heightened risk and cannot be safely managed in prison due to mental disorders may be transferred to secure psychiatric units, where they are treated as patients rather than prisoners.
However, officials highlighted that there is no evidence linking Rudakubana’s crime to a mental health disorder or psychosis, and they emphasized the need for a prison sentence.
Representing the victims’ families, Mr. Walker asserted that the families believe a hospital placement would be inappropriate and that incarceration is the proper course of action.
The families have been offered a meeting with the Director for Public Protection, which Mr. Walker will attend on their behalf to discuss the sentencing outcome.
