The 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is a milestone that sparks reflection and nostalgia. As I prepare to land in Boston, I find myself reminiscing about past celebrations and travels across the country.
Memories of our bicentennial celebration in 1976 flood my mind. A poster of Trumbull's famous painting hung in my classroom, surrounded by red, white, and blue crepe paper ribbons. Later that year, my family embarked on a cross-country road trip, taking in the breathtaking views of the Mississippi River, the Grand Canyon, and the Badlands. I gained a deeper understanding of the diversity of American perspectives, shaped by the places I grew up in and the people I met.
Over the past 25 years, I have had the privilege of visiting dozens of national parks and nearly every state. America's Canyonlands, our journey through the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park, was my first Tauck tour. Living and traveling abroad, I have encountered admiration for Americans and what America represents from people around the world.
For a long time, I thought I knew America and its history. However, working with Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan on Ken Burns American Journeys in 2010 opened my eyes to the nuances of our nation's story. I gained a deeper understanding of the many voices embodied in our nation's motto, E Pluribus Unum, and the significance of our national parks as "the Declaration of Independence applied to the landscape."
For over a century, Tauck has sought to bring American stories to life. Whether through historical perspectives, personal accounts, or sacred traditions, every journey we create is designed to delight and challenge what you know about the United States. I believe that understanding and peace come through travel – not just visiting a place, but listening to its people and hearing their stories.
As I reflect on this milestone anniversary, I am reminded that America remains a place that captures the world's imagination. Our stories, traditions, and diverse perspectives continue to inspire and educate people from around the globe. At Tauck, we are honored to play our part in sharing these stories and welcoming the curious.
