METAVERSE IS DYING: Zuck Just Pulled the Plug!

METAVERSE IS DYING: Zuck Just Pulled the Plug!

The virtual world of Horizon Worlds, once envisioned as a cornerstone of the metaverse, is facing its end. Meta has announced a phased shutdown for VR users, effectively severing the social hub from its original platform by June 15, 2026. The experience will continue, but exclusively on mobile devices.

Launched in 2021, Horizon Worlds promised immersive interaction and boundless creativity. Despite early hurdles – famously, the lack of legs on user avatars – the company initially hoped to attract over a billion users. The reality fell dramatically short, peaking at around 200,000 monthly users.

For those who invested time and digital currency within Horizon Worlds, the news brings uncertainty. While purchases and creations won’t disappear immediately, access will be limited to “mobile-optimized” worlds. Many user-built environments may become inaccessible if creators don’t adapt to the new platform.

The shift signals a broader strategic realignment for Meta, prioritizing artificial intelligence and smart glasses. Recent months have seen the closure of AAA VR game development studios, the discontinuation of the Supernatural fitness app, and significant layoffs within the Reality Labs division.

Despite these cuts, Meta insists it remains committed to VR hardware and supporting third-party developers. The focus is shifting from creating its own content to enhancing the Quest headset experience and fostering a broader ecosystem.

A recent visit to Horizon Worlds felt strangely poignant. It was like stepping into a fading dream – a digital landscape built on the ambition of Mark Zuckerberg and the dedication of countless creators. Billions were invested in a vision of a perpetually vibrant, endlessly customizable world.

The vast majority of the 10,000+ user-created worlds stand eerily empty, resembling a sprawling, digital dead mall. Yet, amidst the emptiness, pockets of genuine community thrived. Places like the Soapstone Comedy Club, a small but lively gathering spot, offered connection and belonging.

For some, Horizon Worlds provided a vital lifeline, offering opportunities for social interaction unavailable in the physical world. Individuals who are housebound, or struggle with social interaction found a space to connect and belong. The comedy may not have been stellar, but the human connection was real.

The prospect of losing these spaces is deeply saddening. A comedy club on a phone screen simply cannot replicate the immersive experience and sense of presence found within VR. Before the digital doors close for good, a visit to Horizon Worlds offers a chance to witness a unique, and soon to be lost, corner of the metaverse.
