Summer Employment Opportunities Remain Available for Students.

Young people who have not found a summer job or started looking for one may be in for a surprise – there are still opportunities available. According to recent statistics, the unemployment rate among youth aged 15 to 24 was 13.4%, but with some effort and strategy, it's possible to find a job. Tim Lang, president and CEO of a Canadian charitable organization that offers job counseling and placement services, knows this from personal experience.

Lang's 19-year-old son recently found a part-time job, which he supplements with another job at a stonework and patio company. While it may not be the most glamorous work, Lang emphasizes that "any job is a good job these days" and can lead to growth and experience. He advises young job-seekers to stay positive and cast a wide net in their search.

Technology has changed the job search landscape, with many employers now requiring online applications. However, Lang notes that there are still opportunities in traditional summer jobs in areas such as hospitality, retail, and landscaping. Additionally, his organization provides digital badges in emerging fields like cloud, cyber, AI, and the green economy.

Young job-seekers should not rely solely on online applications, but also reach out to their local contacts and networks. A recent report found that 62% of small businesses recruit through referrals and trusted networks. This highlights the importance of taking a well-rounded approach to finding a summer job.

Government programs can also be a valuable resource for job-seekers. The federal government's Job Bank website lists available summer jobs, and the Canada Summer Jobs program provides wage subsidies to eligible employers. In Ontario, the Summer Company program offers startup money and mentorship to young entrepreneurs.

If all else fails, why not create your own job? If there's a demand for a certain resource or service in your community, consider starting your own business. And for those who are willing to work hard, opportunities like the Canadian National Exhibition can provide a unique and valuable experience.
